The allegation made by former Rajya Sabha MP V Vijaya Sai Reddy against senior YSR Congress Party leader Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy — that the latter had manhandled him during the YSRCP plenary in 2022 — has triggered a debate in political circles in the state.
Sai Reddy made the allegation in an open letter posted on X recently. He said he was physically assaulted by Sajjala during the YSRCP plenary at Mangalagiri in 2022 and claimed that Jagan was aware of the incident but remained a passive spectator.
Sajjala has already responded to some of the allegations but did not directly address Sai Reddy’s claim that he was physically assaulted. However, some party leaders who were present at the plenary said it was not exactly a physical attack, but that Sajjala had pushed the former MP aside during the course of an argument.
Former YSRCP MLA and current TDP legislator Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, however, came to Sai Reddy’s defence and claimed that Sajjala had indeed assaulted the former MP during the Mangalagiri plenary.
According to Kotamreddy, a disagreement broke out between Sai Reddy and Sajjala over who should be invited to speak on stage during the plenary. The argument reportedly escalated, following which Sajjala allegedly grabbed Sai Reddy by the collar and assaulted him in a restroom beside the stage.
Kotamreddy further claimed that Sai Reddy did not retaliate despite the alleged assault. He also said the former MP had mentioned in his open letter that he had faced 72 instances of humiliation within the YSRCP.
However, Kotamreddy claimed that there was another alleged incident of humiliation that was not included in the list. He recalled an occasion when Sai Reddy visited Tallapudi.
According to Kotamreddy, a grand reception was organised for Vijaya Sai Reddy at Kakupalli Centre, with around 100 vehicles participating in the welcome. Kotamreddy alleged that Sajjala later abused Sai Reddy over the manner in which the reception was organised.
Kotamreddy was elected as the YSRCP MLA from the Nellore Rural Assembly constituency in the 2019 elections. He later fell out with the party leadership and resigned from the YSRCP in March 2023 amid changing political circumstances.
He joined the Telugu Desam Party in July 2023 and contested the 2024 Assembly elections from Nellore Rural on a TDP ticket, winning the seat.
